• Recently, the French Consulate led the Armistice Day observance with ceremonies in Puducherry and Karaikal to mark the conclusion of WWI in 1918.

About Armistice Day

• Also known as Veterans Day. 
• Commemorated every year on 11 November.
• Significance: To mark the armistice signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany at Compiègne, France for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front of World War I. 
• Took effect at eleven in the morning—the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” of 1918. 
• A formal peace agreement was reached only when the Treaty of Versailles was signed the following year.

World War I (WWI)

• Lasted from 28 July 1914 to 11 November 1918.
• WW I was fought between the Allied Powers and the Central Powers.
  • Allied Powers: France, Russia, and Britain. The United States also fought on the side of the Allies after 1917.
  • Central Powers: Germany, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria.
• On June 28, 1919, World War I officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles.
