  • India is contesting, for re-election, to the ITU Council, for the term 2023-2026. 

About 

  • India has been a member of ITU since 1869 and has been continuously participating, actively in the works, and activities of the Union.
  • It has been contributing, to the fullest possible extent, in the growth and development of Telecom/ICTs, for the benefit of the global community.

International Telecommunication Union (ITU)

  • About:
    • It is the United Nations specialised agency for Information and Communication Technologies ( ICTs).
    • Founded in 1865 to facilitate international connectivity in communications networks.
    • The ITU is governed by the Plenipotentiary Conference and the Administrative Council. The Plenipotentiary Conference is the supreme organ of the Union. 
  • Functions: 
    • It allocates global radio spectrum and satellite orbits.
    • It  develops the technical standards that ensure networks and technologies seamlessly interconnect, and strive to improve access to ICTs to underserved communities worldwide.  
    • It is committed to connecting all the world’s people – wherever they live and whatever their means.
