Recently ,Skyshade Daylights Private Limited – the only Start-up company in India for Daylight Harvesting Technologies signed an MoU with Technology Development Board.

  • TDB (Technology Development Board) is a statutory body of the Department of Science & Technology.

About 

  • The Ministry of Science & Technology will give Rs 5 Crore of the 10 Crore project to Skyshade company for developing new technologies for basement illumination on a 24×7 basis. 
  • The unique start-up is engaged in roots starting with design & build operations of large skylight domes for building atriums and solar thermal technologies.
  • The start-up has also come up with two more innovative solutions comprising:
    • Human centric-climate adaptive building facades
    • Central integrated daylighting system
      • The two above mentioned systems will give a new horizon to the daylighting. These innovations are easily affordable, adaptable and economically viable
  • The company has proposed a complete solution for Daylight Harvesting through their technologies to reduce carbon footprint and improve the building energy efficiency. 
  • The company aims to create Green & Net zero buildings and to participate and contribute in national missions under the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC).

What is Daylight Harvesting Technology?

  • Daylighting is basically bringing natural sunlight inside the rooms. 
  •  Daylight Harvesting is one of the most advanced techniques used in sustainable lighting designs for contemporary buildings.
  •  It automatically adjusts the brightness of light in conjecture to the amount of light available in that space.
  • The solar energy spectrum has 45% energy as visible light and this can be used to harvest building illumination for about 9-11 hours a day
    • The Technology used is completely indigenous, economically viable and easy to deploy and needs minimal maintenance with longevity. 
    • Moreover, the proposed technologies, harvest huge quantities of sunlight for a building and make available for building illumination which reduces electrical lighting energy consumption by 70-80%, besides reducing air-conditioning (cooling load) consumption.

  • The renewable energy sector in India is expanding with the ever-increasing need of energy. 
  • Lighting is a fundamental requirement of daily life. Daylight is available universally and it is a very clean and cost-efficient source of energy
    • Meeting energy requirements during the day by using daylight harvesting technology will contribute immensely to meet one of the commitments of the five nectars of “PANCHAMRIT” i.e., to make India a Net Zero emission country by 2070. 
  • India’s targets are set – an ambitious target to achieve a capacity of 175 GW of its energy requirement from renewable energy sources by the end of this year and further, committed to achieve 500 GW by 2030. 
    • The daylight harvesting technology will be the next step towards a sustainable future.

the Other initiatives to Promote Energy Efficiency

  • Standards and Labelling
    • It was initiated in 2006 to provide the consumer an informed choice about the energy saving and thereby the cost saving potential of the relevant marketed product.
  • Energy Conservation Building Codes (ECBC)
    • It was developed by the Govt. of India for new commercial buildings on 27th May 2007. ECBC sets minimum energy standards for new commercial buildings having a connected load of 100kW or contract demand of 120 KVA and above.
  • School Education Program –
    •  The Bureau of Energy Efficiency is implementing the Students Capacity Building Programme under Energy Conservation awareness scheme for XII five year plan and intends to prepare the text/material on Energy Efficiency and Conservation for its proposed incorporation in the existing science syllabi and science text books of NCERT for classes 6th to 10th. 
  • Human Resource Development (HRD) –
    • The potential for improvement of energy efficiency of processes and equipment through awareness creation is vast.
      •  A sound policy for creation, retention and up gradation of skills of Human Resources is very crucial for penetration of energy efficient technologies and practices in various sectors.
  •  National Mission for Enhanced Energy Efficiency (NMEEE)
    • It is one of the eight missions under the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC). 
    • It aims to strengthen the market for energy efficiency by creating conducive regulatory and policy regime and has envisaged fostering innovative and sustainable business models to the energy efficiency sector.
  • National Energy Conservation Awards
    • The annual energy conservation awards recognize innovation and achievements in energy conservation by the industries, buildings, zonal railways, state designated agencies; manufacturers of BEE star labelled appliances, electricity distribution companies, municipalities and raise awareness that energy conservation plays a big part in India’s response to reducing global warming through energy savings.
