  • Recently, the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Awards were presented to the 24 Award winners.
    • These awards have been provided for best writings in twenty-four Indian languages. 

About Sahitya Akademi Awards

  • It was established in 1954, is a literary honour.
    • The first Awards were given in 1955.
  • It is conferred by Sahitya Akademi which is India’s National Academy of Letters.
  • The Sahitya Akademi Award prizes the most outstanding books of literary merit published in any of the major Indian languages recognised by the Akademi.
  • The award amount, which was Rs.5,000 since inception, had been enhanced to Rs.10,000 from 1983, Rs.25,000 from 1988, Rs.40,000 from 2001, Rs.50,000 from 2003 and is now Rs.1,00,000 from 2009. 

Sahitya Akademi

  • It is an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Culture, encouraging the preservation and promotion of languages, especially the unrecognised and tribal languages.
  • The Sahitya Akademi Library is one of the largest multi-lingual libraries in India, with a rich collection of books on literature and allied subjects.
  • It publishes two bi-monthly literary journals: Indian Literature in English and Samkaleen Bharatiya Sahitya in Hindi.
