• The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting announced a total budget of Rs 597 Crore for large scale preservation of films under the National Film Heritage Mission.

• About: The National Film Heritage Mission is an important initiative to preserve and conserve the country’s cinematic heritage.
• Launch year: It was launched by the Information & Broadcasting Ministry in the year 2016.
• Nodal Agency: National Film Archive of India (NFAI) is the nodal organization for the implementation of this project.
• Objectives:
  • Undertake film condition assessment
  • Preventive conservation of around 150,000 film reels
  • Digitization of around 3500 films, picture
  • Sound restoration of around 2000 landmark films of Indian cinema
  • Construction of Preservation and Conservation facilities (vaults), training and workshops
  • Creating a comprehensive Web-based End to End IT solution.

About National Film Archive of India (NFAI)

• Established in 1964 under the aegis of the I&B Ministry, the National Film Archive of India aims to trace, acquire and preserve the heritage of national cinema and a representative collection of world cinema.
• It faced a paucity of funds as well as required facilities to preserve the films effectively.
• The government came to its rescue by launching NFHM in 2016 and appropriately funding it to make up for the shortfalls.
