- Recently ,India successfully test-fired its indigenously developed, nuclear-capable Prithvi-II missile during night time as part of a user training trial from a test range off the Odisha coast.
- The trial of the surface-to-surface missile was carried out from a mobile launcher .
- The missile was randomly chosen from the production stock and the entire launch was carried out by the Strategic Force Command (SFC) of the Army and monitored by the scientists of the DRDO as part of a training exercise.
About Prithvi-II
- It is capable of carrying 500-1,000 kilogram of warheads and is powered by liquid propulsion twin engines.
- It has a strike range of 350 km.
- The missile is a proven system and is capable of striking targets with a very high degree of precision.
- The state-of-the-art missile uses an advanced inertial guidance system with manoeuvering trajectory to hit its target.
- Induction
- Prithvi-II, first tested in 1996, was inducted into Indian armed forces in 2003.
- It was one of the first missiles developed under Government of India’s IGMDP.
- Prithvi I
- Launched in February 1988, Prithvi I is a single-stage, liquid-fuelled missile.
- A surface-to-surface missile, it has a range of 150 km and a mounting capability of 1000 kg. It was inducted into the Indian Army in 1994.
