  • The 8th edition of the International Day of Yoga is being observed across the world. 

About the International Day of Yoga

  • It is celebrated every year on June 21 across the world to spread awareness about the benefits of yoga for health and well-being.
  • The International Day of Yoga aims to raise awareness worldwide of the many benefits of practising yoga.
  • This year’s theme : ‘Yoga for Humanity’. 
  • Background
    • The idea to have a UN-mandated day to celebrate Yoga was propounded by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014 at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
    • The draft resolution establishing the International Day of Yoga was endorsed by a record 175 member states. 

About Yoga

  • Yoga originated in ancient India, and is a group of physical, mental and spiritual exercises that involves mindful and controlled breathing and various body movements to rejuvenate the body and calm the mind. 
  • It emphasises the values of mindfulness, moderation, discipline and perseverance. 
  • It is also playing a significant role in the psycho-social care and rehabilitation of Covid-19 patients in quarantine and isolation. 
    • It is particularly helpful in allaying their fears and anxiety.
