Madurkathi

• Recently, two women from West Bengalhave been given the National Handicraft Award in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the development of Madur floor mats that are unique to West Bengal. 
  • Madur is a mat made by weaving Madur Kathi.

About Madurkathi

• Madurkathi is a rhizome-based plant (Cyperus tegetum or Cyperus pangorei) found abundantly in the alluvial tracts of Purba and Paschim Medinipur.
  • The land and climate of the Purba and Paschim Medinipur districts (WB) is suitable for cultivating MadurKathi. 
• The sticks can be reaped for a period of 3-4 years once the rhizomes are sown. 
• Madhurkathi was awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag by the Geographical Indication Registry in April 2018.
