In News 

  • After 75 years, Jammu and Kashmir observed a holiday on the birth anniversary of Dogra monarch Maharaja Hari Singh.

About Maharaja Hari Singh and Related events 

  • He was born to Maharaja Amar Singh on September 23, 1895, and died of cardiac arrest on April 26, 1961, in Mumbai 
  • Important Event: When the British formally left on August 15, 1947, Maharaja Hari Singh, who was a Hindu ruler of a Muslim-majority state, wanted his state to remain independent and thus had a standstill agreement with both India and Pakistan.
    • However, in the wake of an invasion by tribal raiders backed by Pakistan, Hari Singh fled Kashmir and signed an Instrument of Accession with India on October 26, 1947.
    • However, as Pakistan continued to control a sizable part  of the state, the issue was taken to the Union Nations  Organisation, which in its resolution dated 21 April 1948  
    • However, no progress could  be achieved under this resolution. 
  • In the meanwhile,  Sheikh Abdullah took over as the Prime Minister of the  State of J&K in March 1948 while India agreed to grant  it provisional autonomy under Article 370.

Do you Know ?

  • According to Article 370, Jammu and Kashmir had its own Constitution, and all laws passed by Parliament will not be applicable to the State, unless the State government gives its concurrence.
  • The special status of Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 of the Constitution was revoked by the Parliament on August 5, 2019 and the former State was split into two Union Territories — Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
