- Recently, Border Roads Organisation (BRO) conducted the final blast for the 980-metre long Sela Tunnel (Tunnel 1)under Project Vartak.
About
- The foundation stone of the Sela Tunnel Project was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019.
- It is located in the West Kameng District of Arunachal Pradesh.
- The project comprises Tunnel 1, which is a 980 m long single tube tunnel and Tunnel 2, which is a 1555 m long twin-tube tunnel.
- Tunnel 2 has one bi-lane tube for traffic and one escape tube for emergencies.
- It is being excavated below the 4,200 metres Sela Pass on NH 13 section of Trans-Arunachal Highway system.
Significance
- It is being built to provide all-weather connectivity between Guwahati in Assam and Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh.
- It is being constructed to provide all weather connectivity to Tawang.
- The tunnel would also ensure better movement of troops and weaponry to different locations along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
