Recently, three monuments in Andhra Pradesh have been identified under the Adarsh Smarak Scheme.
About
- The monuments of Nagarjunakonda in Guntur, Buddhist remains of Salihundam in Srikakulam and Veerabhadra temple (Lepakshi) in Anantapur have been identified under the Adarsh Smarak Scheme for providing additional facilities like Wi-Fi, cafeteria, interpretation centre, Braille signages, illumination and others.
- Similarly, the fort at Gandikota in Kadapa district has been included in the government’s Adopt a Heritage scheme to bring in additional funds for its maintenance and management.
About Adarsh Smarak Scheme
- The Ministry of Culture has taken up the scheme to develop and maintain 100 monuments protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in the country.
- The scheme was launched on 26th December 2014.
- Objectives
- It aims at providing improved visitor amenities, especially for the physically challenged, besides cleanliness, drinking water, and interpretation centres, cafeteria, souvenir shop, wi-fi, garbage disposal etc.
- To make the monument visitor friendly.

About Adopt a Heritage: ‘Apni Dharohar Apni Pehchaan’
- The Ministry of Tourism has launched the “Adopt a Heritage: Apni Dharohar, Apni Pehchaan” project in 2017 on the occasion of World Tourism Day.
- It is a collaborative effort by the Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Culture, Archaeological Survey of India and State/ UTs Government for developing tourism amenities at heritage/ natural/ tourist sites spread across India for making them tourist-friendly, in a planned and phased manner.
- The project aims to encourage companies from the public sector, private sector, corporate citizens, NGOs, individuals and other stakeholders to become ‘Monument Mitras’ and take up the responsibility of developing and upgrading the basic and advanced tourist amenities at these sites as per their interest and viability in terms of a sustainable investment model under corporate social responsibility (CSR).
- They would also look after the Operation & Maintenance of the same.
- Objectives
- Developing basic tourism infrastructure in and around heritage sites, monuments, natural sites and tourist sites.
- Develop facilities and amenities to improve the tourist experience at heritage sites, monuments, natural sites and tourist sites.
- Promote cultural and heritage value of the country and develop avenues to create awareness about the heritage/natural/tourist sites in the country
- Develop and promote sustainable tourism infrastructure and ensure proper Operations and Maintenance therein.
- Develop employment opportunities and support livelihoods of local communities at the heritage, natural and tourist sites.
Who is Monument Mitra?
- Successful bidders selected for adopting heritage, natural, tourist sites / monuments by the Oversight and Vision Committee shall be called Monument Mitras.
