- India has achieved the milestone of 50 per cent of rural households having access to tap water connections under Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM).
- The Mission aims to ensure tap water supply or ‘Har Ghar Jal’ to all rural households by 2024.
Jal Jeevan Mission
- About:
- The Mission is envisioned to provide safe and adequate drinking water through individual household tap connections by 2024 to all households in rural India.
- Focus Areas: The programme also focuses on:
- recharge and reuse through grey water management
- water conservation
- rain water harvesting
- Community based programme:
- The Jal Jeevan Mission will be based on a community approach to water and will include extensive Information, Education and communication as a key component of the mission.
- It aims to create a Jan Andolan for water, thereby making it everyone’s priority.
- Launched: The Mission was launched on August 15, 2019.
- Concerned Ministry: It comes under the Ministry of Jal Shakti.
- Funding Pattern: The fund sharing pattern between the Centre and states is:
- 90:10 for Himalayan and North-Eastern States
- 50:50 for other states
- 100% for Union Territories.
- Objectives
- It aims to assist, empower and facilitate States and UTs in:
- Planning of participatory rural water supply strategy for ensuring potable drinking water security on a long-term basis to every rural household and public institution.
- Creating water supply infrastructure so that every rural household has Functional Tap Connection (FHTC) by 2024 and water in adequate quantity of prescribed quality.
- Ensuring drinking water security.
